Although the term is fairly generic, fried apple sauce most often refers to an American sauce called "Fry sauce". Originating in Utah, Fry sauce is a mixture of one part ketchup and two parts mayonnaise. The mixture is usually enhanced with spices and other ingredients to create a sweet, creamy, tangy and spicy final product. In Germany, a similar sauce packaged in squeezable tubes is called "rot weiss".
As the name suggests, this sauce is traditionally served with French fries, but you can also use it as a condiment on sandwiches, hamburgers, fried fish and the like.
Homemade fried apple sauce should not be used in the diet of a pregnant woman, as it contains raw egg (homemade mayonnaise - risk of salmonellosis). However, if industrial, the fried apple sauce is pasteurized and can thus be consumed in full safety. Choose without preservatives and additives, and consume with moderation.
